Marmaris and Icmeler has attracted many foreigners not only for short term visits as tourists, but also as residents. The number of people from around the world who work and live around Marmaris are increasing steadily every year. The easy and relaxing mediterranean life style, very friendly people, beautifull climate around the year, healthy food and living, affordability of real estate compared to home country, business opportunities beacuse of inefficiencies in the market and a lot of recreational activities to do are some of the factors that attracts people to this amazing corner of the mediterranean sea.

Marmaris and its surrounding area covers such a large area. When we say "live around Marmaris" we cover all of the unspoiled villages, fisherman's countryside, inland properties suitable for vineyarding, farming, etc.

So, Why then people choose to live in this particular area. As briefly mentioned above, the reasons are so many. Here are some of them explained:

    Mediterranean Life Style

Who haven't heard about Mediterranean life style! Not so many people... It is publiciezed frequently that Mediterranean living is one of the best life styles you can adopt. So many books are published about it and a lot of people dream about retiring to a little town on the Mediterranean Coastline. What makes it so attractive and desirable? Actually the answer is very simple: The simplicity of daily life. Mediterranean people are know as very relaxed people. They are very happy with little things. They eat healthy since most of the ingredients are locally produced and sold in farmers markets. People communicate, held and share instead of competing with eachother. There is always smile in faces because of very little reasons: "The weather is nice :) ", "it is sunny today :) ","My wife is beautiful :)" are just a few basic reasons to be happy. After all, remember the movie "Life is Beautiful!" produced by Italians. Life is really beautiful. Very Friendly People

  • BBC News About Marmaris Bombings

Three bombs have hit the Turkish tourist resort of Marmaris, a popular destination for British holidaymakers.

It is a place that has been transformed by the development of the tourism industry, and is geared up to welcome Britons.

The town of Marmaris, at one time a quiet fishing village, has become one of the favourite tourist resorts for Britons in Turkey. It was the most popular destination in Turkey among British holidaymakers until this year when it was overtaken by Bodrum, according to a study by online travel agency Freedom Direct. Catering for the British market, the town's attractions include a restaurant called the Rover's Return in honour of the famous fictional pub in TV soap Coronation Street. Marmaris is set around a large natural harbour on the south-east coast of Turkey, where the Aegean and the Mediterranean seas meet, and the bay features a long, sandy beach. Visitors will find plenty seafood restaurants, cafes and bars, and boat trips and scuba diving are among the top attractions. The influx of tourists during the summer months helps boost the town's population from 150,000 to 200,000, according to the Lonely Planet travel guide. "Fish and chips with beer by the gallon" is served up, it says. The guide also says Marmaris also has Turkey's leading yacht marina and is the country's main centre for chartering yachts. Almost 1.8 million British tourists visited Turkey last year.

  • What brings you back to Marmaris?

Marmaris comes close to being everything for everybody.

We like to spend lazy days by the pool, just mooching around, eating and reading for the most part.

We also do quite a bit of shopping both by day and in the evening, the markets and the bazaar are an endless source of fun bartering with the locals and joking.  Sometimes we even barter for the fun of it, then just pay the original asking price if it's reasonable.

In the past easy bargains could be had in clothing, silverware, household goods and of course gold and leather. These are not so common any more and often require harder work to get the prices to a level you are willing to pay.

Food is available at prices from dirt cheap to reasonable, quality varies but in general if you pay a bit more then the food is better, but then that's true everywhere. In some places it's stunning and literally superb. If you are any kind of wine lover FORGET IT! Drink the local spirits or Efes Light or Dark by all means but frankly leave the wine alone, most of it is not refined and Turkish wine making is still in it's infancy.

This said Turkish people are almost universally excellent. They will usually treat you well and if you are friendly to them they will "see you right".

In the past My holiday time has been May and in that month it is pleasantly temperate here. I've spent many evenings propping up a bar and chatting to the bar staff.  What I did not expect was to be stopped in the street in September (also a good time to go) by one of the ex bar staff at my commonest waterhole and greeted as a long lost friend.  He recognised me from behind, on a crowded street at the wrong time of the year, wearing totally different clothing to my normal "evening" getup.  These guys are amazing!

For those who like bars and dancing to all hours, shows, Karaoke, or simply drinking Marmaris has it.

If you like culture ancient monuments and history, some of it's available in Marmaris, or you can take a trip to Rhodes (I know it's not Turkey! but it is only 45 mins away!) or Ephesus. A massive range of trips are available, check out the local travel agents if you want to go on one. Make sure they have a licence though.

My recommendation?  Visit Turkey soon before it becomes the same as everywhere else!

    Tim
