Turkey

Beautiful coastline, friendly people, good fresh foods and delicious local wines, that could easily compete against many European vineyards. The summer is long and good weather is virtually guaranteed between May and as late as end October.

Few countries in the world have such a cultural diversity as Turkey. Spanning over two continents combining the East, the West and the Orient of today with the ancient Byzantine, Ottoman, Roman and Persian empires. Turkey stands in a class of its own.

Please watch this video to find out why Turkey

Bodrum is the premier yachting centre in Turkey. Surrounded by wild mountains, it offers a panorama of history, mythology and spectacular scenery. Dominated by the medieval caste of St. Peter, it was the birth place of Herodotus and an important port and capital of the kingdom of Caria. The city is also home to the tomb of Mausolus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, belonging to the third century B.C.

Once you leave the harbour, the vast expanse of the Gulf of Gokova stretches before you, this area alone has enough stunning places to visit for at least a week of sailing. Sehir Adalari (Snake and Castle Island) is well known for Cleopatra's Beach, which she is believed to have made for her lover Anthony with sands shipped from North Africa. The nearby bays of Kesr, Sogut and Degirmen Buku, located in the far east of the gulf are all spectacular anchorages.

Sailing south, guarded by the Greek island of Symi, is the Gulf of Hisaronu, which means Gulf of Fortresses, a reference to the many ancient and medieval forts scattered around the hills of the Gulf. Dacta, being the largest village in the gulf and an ideal place to provision between Marmaris and Bodrum, is well worth a visit as it is still relatively untouched by tourists and very picturesque.

Marmaris
Set against a backdrop of pine clad hills, Marmaris is a resort that combines natural beauty with an astounding zest for life. Famed forits nightlife, the most extravagant on the entire South coast, this developedresort offers the best of both worlds; the nightlife is unending, andnumerous clubs and bars stretch along the coast from the elegant marinato the curve of Icmeler, the smaller resort close by. On the other hand, thesurrounding countryside offers the best in culture, due to the successionof scenic roads and sympathetic villages, which lead to ancient ruins andunspoilt beaches.Perfect for all age groups, Marmaris is one of the most popular resorts inTurkey. Once you visit it, you will understand why.

I've been to Marmaris before and going again this summer. Food isn't that expensive, i found that most of my money went on day trips, there's so much to offer!

The restraunt owners and staff are all very pushy, but if you say sorry i'm all inclusive then they kinda leave you alone. Overall a great holiday destination

Is it loud or suitable for families too?

danielle said:

yes. you can purchase turkish sim cards to use when your over there but you will probably find it cheaper using a phone box as they are surprisingly cheap. You don't need to take a lot of money as it tends to be very cheap over there, there is lots to do and you will never find yourself board. however men over there can be rather dodgy with Females, and sometimes they will just not take no for an answer.

The men in Marmaris are over friendly, but were warned by their tourism officers a few years ago that they were losing British customers by their sometimes pushy tactics to get tourists in shops/bars and so they have calmed down a lot. Just say no thanks and they should leave you alone. Stay in the busy areas if you are not overly confident.

Marmaris is fairly cheap but not dirt cheap so be careful. On average, a full evening meal with a drink will cost you about £8-10, a full English breakfast + tea/coffee is approx £2-3, beer, drinks and juices are slightly cheaper than at home and you can find advertised cheaper drinks. Day trips/jeep safari/boat trips are approx £18 pp but can sometimes be negotiated down to two for £28 etc. If Self Catering then you need more cash but can economise on keeping juice water in your own fridge and making your own breakfast/ lunch some days. If All Inclusive then take extra cash as you must eat out some nights and drink at other places - this is the whole fun of Marmaris! The airports are very expensive. Take some English money to the markets, you can get a better bargain that way (i.e 3 t-shirts for £10).

I have been to Marmaris 3 times, and am going again next week. The last comment is about right for prices, but clothes are cheaper - we got 12 'designer' t-shirts for a tenner, so haggle plenty. The upper end of the fake market is much better quality - I bought a g-star t-shirt and jeans for £25 three years ago, and they are still in excellent condition. Turkey is the worlds second largest cotton producer, and thats why clothes are cheap. If you go, try Bar Nil at the end of the marina (closest to Bar Street) - excellent food. The guys are Thomas Cook, Ice Cream and Tony Macaroni. Laters
